Damon Wayans Talks About The Bill Cosby Case: Actor Sparks Criticism With His Defense

Damon Wayans defended Bill Cosby during a live interview on radio on Friday. Wayans made an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio program, and he spoke candidly about his career. According to Vulture, he also shared his thoughts on the rape scandal involving Bill Cosby, and he defended the actor.

Cosby has been in the media repeatedly in recent years because of the rape allegations against him. According to a previous Inquisitr report, more than 40 women have come forward to say that Cosby sexually assaulted them at some point during the last 40 years.

Cosby has tried to deny the allegations against him, but more women keep coming forward. People Magazine reported last month that two more women have come forward with allegations of sexual assault against Bill Cosby.

Damon Wayans does not believe many of the claims though. During his interview on Friday, he spoke candidly about the situation.

“Tell the truth. If I was him, I would divorce my wife, give her all my money and then I would go do a deposition. I would light one of [those] three-hour cigars. I’d have some wine and maybe a Quaalude and I would just go off, because I don’t believe that he was raping. I believe he was in relationships with all of them and then he’s like, ‘You know what? [I’m] 78. It don’t work like that no more. I can’t get it up for any of y’all. Bye, b***hes,’ and then they’re like, ‘Oh, really? Rape!'”

He followed up by calling some of the women “unrapeable” because the alleged attacks happened on more than one occasion. He did backtrack some after his initial comments. He admitted there might be some true cases of rape within the accusations. For those cases, he said that, “For anybody who was raped by Bill Cosby, I’m sorry, and I hope you get justice.”

According to the Guardian, his comments on Friday caused outrage among listeners. Some went right to their Twitter accounts to express their outrage over Wayans’ defense of Bill Cosby.

Cosby is facing legal troubles because of the allegations against him. On Friday, there was a setback in his court case. His attorneys filed a motion in July for discovery in regards to a disposition from the 2005 assault case. The attorneys claimed that the woman in that case and her attorney were involved in the release of that disposition to the media.

However, a judge denied their motion on Friday, according to the Wrap.

In his ruling, Judge John R. Padova said that, “[T]he essential limitations on what Ms. Troiani may do with regard to the Constand documents are set forth in the Constand agreement and not in our June 11, 2015 order. Accordingly, Defendant may not probe the circumstances of that release through discovery in this miscellaneous proceeding, and we deny Defendant’s Motion for Leave to Take Discovery.”

Damon Wayans is not the only person to speak out publicly to defend Bill Cosby. Whoopi Goldberg was very public in her support of Cosby. She spoke candidly about the scandal surrounding him on The View, but her outspoken comments received a lot of criticism by viewers of the daytime talk show.

According to the Daily Mail, ABC forced Whoopi to change her stance after the network received many anti-Whoopi comments. Publicist Ryan McCormick spoke out about the situation.

“It provides cover for Whoopi Goldberg because she made those statements and she was passionate about them. It also provides cover for the greater good of the show and for the greater good of ABC – for them to orchestrate this – it was a really great strategy. It worked out well because as the story gets progressively worse, you don’t want to be seen as somebody defending someone, especially when they’ve admitted on public record for doing something so horrific.”

His former TV family has also spoken out about the situation. Keshia Knight Pulliam defended Cosby in 2014. She was asked about the allegations during promotion for The Apprentice, according to Entertainment Weekly.

“What I can say is this: I wasn’t there. No one was there except for the two people who know exactly what happened. All I can speak to is the man that I know and I love. The fact that he’s been such an example, you can’t take away from the great that he has done. You know, the amount, the millions and millions of dollars that he has given back to colleges and education, and just what he did with ‘The Cosby Show’ and how groundbreaking that was […] Ultimately, they’re just that, allegations. You know, it’s very much been played out in the court of public opinion. But we’re still in America, where ultimately you’re innocent until proven guilty. I wasn’t there. That’s just not the man I know. So I can’t speak to it.”

This case is still ongoing. Cosby will give a disposition in court on October 9. During a press conference, Gloria Allred spoke about the upcoming court appearance.

She said, “We expect to take the deposition of Bill Cosby, not the friendly father figure of his television character, Dr. Huxtable. We want the real Bill Cosby to show up, not Dr. Huxtable and we expect Mr. Cosby will answer our questions fully and completely.”
