Watch Pittsburgh Pirates Vs. St. Louis Cardinals Live Online: Cards Face Rare Home Series Loss

The Pittsburgh Pirates can inflict the first home series loss on the St. Louis Cardinals in five weeks in a game fans can watch live online Sunday. A win would move Pittsburgh to within 5 1/2 games of the National League Central Division-leading Cardinals, the team with the best record in Major League Baseball.

The Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday, beating the Cardinals 9-3 behind starter J.A. Happ, who won his fourth start in row. But on Saturday, the Cardinals got seven scoreless innings from Jaime Garcia on their way to a series-evening 4-1 victory.

The rubber match comes Sunday night, with Pittsburgh needing to nail down the victory to keep themselves in the race for the NL Central top spot. However, even that would leave them a long shot at 5 1/2 games out and just 27 remaining on their schedule.

Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Central Time at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on September 6 — 8:05 p.m. Eastern Time, 5:05 Pacific.

In a battle of youth against experience, the Pirates send 24-year-old, third-year starter Gerrit Cole to the mound against the elder statesman of the St. Louis pitching staff, 13-year veteran John Lackey.

At age 36, Lackey is in the process of putting together his best season since 2007.

In that year, when he was still with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim — the organization that drafted him in the second round in 1999 — Lackey posted an American League best 3.01 ERA with 19 wins against nine losses.

This season, with his third team after being traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Cardinals at the 2014 trade deadline, Lackey has compiled an ERA of 2.97 and an 11-8 record. But his ERA+ — measure that compares a pitcher to the rest of the league with a 100 score being exactly average — stands at 136, the best of his career, except for that 2007 season when he posted a brilliant 150.

Cole, however, has a 2.64 ERA, which translates into a 145 ERA + in 27 starts. His win-loss record is 15-8, giving the youngster an outside chance of winning 20 games, a feat accomplished rarely in baseball’s current era.
