According to CBS News, at least 35.5 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home during Labor Day weekend, but if a getaway is not in your plans and you need something to do, most retail stores, restaurants, and movie theaters will be open.
Walmart, Target, Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, and all the popular “big box” stores will be open on Labor Day with sales running throughout the holiday weekend. If you are shopping for food for a barbecue, major grocery chains like Stop and Shop, Food Lion, Publix, and Kroeger will be open.
Cross Costco off your list —it’s one of the only warehouse stores that will be closed on September 7. Sam’s Club closes at 6 p.m. on Monday, but BJ’s will be open regular business hours.
According to Saving Advice, Labor Day weekend is a great time to buy a new mattress —Sleepy’s is currently offering 50 percent off all mattresses. Need patio furniture for next summer? Hit the sale rack and stock up on summer clothing that may be discounted at more than 50 percent off retail at stores like JC Penney, Macy’s, and Old Navy. Target is offering a $10 off $40 kids’ clothing coupon and Aeropostale has a $10 off a $50 purchase available during the holiday weekend.
The Sun Sentinel has a long list of in-store Labor Day deals, including $10 off $30 at Bath & Body Works, $10 off a $30 purchase at Kohl’s, and $10 off a purchase of $25 or more at JC Penney.
Out shopping and need a bite to eat? Most chain restaurants, including Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Cracker Barrel, and Olive Garden will be open throughout the holiday weekend. Call ahead as holiday hours often vary by location.
Labor Day is a federal holiday, so most non-essential government employees will have Monday off. Although stores and restaurants will be open, federal and state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security, the IRS, banks, and the U.S. Postal Service will all be closed on September 7.
