Eagles QB Deal Makes Tim Tebow Decision A No-Brainer

Tim Tebow was on the roster bubble for the entire preseason. But after the Eagles dealt third string QB Matt Barkley to the Cardinals on Friday, it’s clear Phialdelphia coach Chip Kelly had the former Heisman winner in his plans all along.

As reported by USA Today, the Eagles dealt QB Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional seventh round pick. The move strengthens the Cardinals depth which suffered last year after after not one, but two of their quarterbacks went down prior to the beginning of the playoffs in 2014. Starting QB Carson Palmer tore his ACL after leading the team to first place in the NFC West and backup Drew Stanton suffered similar season ending injuries to his shoulder.

The result left the Cardinals facing an early exit from last year’s playoffs despite an 11-5 record. The QB deal that brought in the Eagles’ Barkley supplies assurances that should the Cardinals make a run at the postseason, they’ll be in much more capable hands than last year.

But really, as much as the QB deal was a no-brainer for the Cardinals, the real story here is of course the other third stringer Barkley was battling with during the Eagles preseason: Tim Tebow. The move almost guarantees the former Heisman winner a spot, as reported by Inquisitr.

But even before the deal for QB Matt Barkley, Eagles coach Chip Kelly hinted for weeks that “Timmy” was in his season plans. As ESPN pointed out, Kelly rolled out specialized packages in the preseason unique to Tebow’s skillset that he didn’t use with other Eagles QBs.

“Kelly was intrigued by what Tebow might do in his offense. He showed that by running read-option plays in preseason games with Tebow and not with the other quarterbacks. And he showed it by having Tebow line up to attempt a pair of two-point conversions in the Eagles’ game against Green Bay.”

It also helped that Tim played well against the NY Jets last night in the final preseason game. Tebow threw for 189 yards on 11 for 17 passes, adding two touchdowns and one interception along with 32 rushing yards on four carries. Couple that with Barkley’s two interceptions and Tim Tebow made it known that he belongs on the Eagles roster.

Now he just needs coach Chip Kelly to make it official. And after dealing Eagles QB Matt Barkley to the Cardinals, it looks like he finally will.
