Tom Cruise: Bringing Maverick Back? Planning To Star In ‘Top Gun 2?’

Tom Cruise has been a hot topic as of late for more reasons than his decisions based on his affiliation with the Church of Scientology. The star has furthered the success of the Mission Impossible franchise by superbly taking his audience on one more thrilling ride in the latest installment, Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation.

Reports are also being made that Cruise has a few additional ventures on the go that, if accurate, will surely come as good news to the star’s fans. The Master Herald has recently shared that Tom is set to bring back the brooding 80’s pilot, Maverick, in a much overdue sequel to the smash hit, Top Gun, It would seem a bit odd to reintroduce Maverick as a daring pilot now in his mid-50s. However, Cruise is reportedly interested in making a cameo appearance. If and when the film is made and released, the producers and Cruise himself, intend to make Maverick the star once more.

The publication shared the reasons for a possible sequel to the 80’s flick.

“Reports indicate that [Cruise is] currently working on “Mission: Impossible 6” and “Top Gun 2? among other things… The actor seems to be quite excited to continue his hard work and keep pleasing his fans, which is good because many people have been paying attention to what he’s doing lately and his fanbase has actually been growing, despite some speculation that his popularity might be on a decline.”

Cruise is working hard to maintain his reputation as a talented and driven actor. As noted before Mission Impossible 5 was released, Tom was adamant about performing all of his own stunts for the film to ensure his audience would be as entertained and baffled as possible while Cruise brought Ethan Hunt to life once more. Variety recently communicated the process followed to manage safe and captivating stunt results. The Stunt Coordinator additionally shared the difference between working with a stuntman and an actor who is performing the stunts.

“If I’ve got a stunt guy working, we cut in and out, and the stunt guy does what’s required of him as a stuntman. With Tom, he’ll do what’s required of him as a stuntman, but he also has to act the character. That’s the biggest difference.”

With Top Gun 2, Cruise reportedly sought to bring a younger audience to the theaters in order to introduce them to the Maverick. Many of Tom’s fans have likely only heard about the Top Gun pilot in reference to 80’s pop culture.

The Master Herald expands on this point.

” [I]t’s been nearly three decades since we saw the original, and a lot has happened since then. People who grew up with ‘Top Gun’ are now in their middle ages, while many younger film lovers have only heard of the original in passing references but have never actually seen it. And from what we’re hearing about ‘Top Gun 2’, the new film could possibly change the overall idea of the plot to modernize it a bit. The main point is that fighter jets operated by actual pilots are becoming more and more rare nowadays, as warfare is moving towards automation through the use of drones and other remote tools.”

It’s without question that fans would flock to theaters in order to see what a more mature and daring Maverick/Cruise will surprise us with three decades later.
