Post Office Hours Labor Day 2015: Is There Mail Delivery September 7?

Wondering if the post office is open on Labor Day, and if the letter carrier will deliver the mail on Monday? Although most retail stores and restaurants will be open on September 7, the U.S. Postal Service will be closed.

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the federal holiday is observed on Monday, and most government offices, including the USPS, will be closed all day. If you need to buy stamps or mail a package, you will have to wait until Tuesday when all post office locations reopen and mail delivery resumes.

If you have an urgent package to mail out on Monday, you’re out of luck. In addition to the U.S. Postal Service, both UPS and FedEx will be closed on Labor Day, with only USP Express Critical and FEDEX Custom critical packages set for delivery on Monday.

Labor Day isn’t the only federal holiday observed by the U.S. Postal Service. According to the Holiday Schedule, the all post office locations are closed on 10 holidays each year. Most government offices, including the DMV, Social Security, and the IRS are closed as well.

Monday is also a bank holiday for most banks and credit unions across the U.S. If you need to make a deposit, withdrawal, or transfer funds, you will have to use an ATM or online banking on Labor Day. According to Mass Live, some banks are open special hours throughout the holiday weekend, so call ahead just to be sure.

Although most government offices, banks, and the stock market are closed on Monday, you will be able to go shopping, dine out, and catch a movie on Labor Day. If a holiday cookout isn’t your thing, most movie theaters, malls, and big retail stores like Walmart, Target, and KMart will be open regular business hours on September 7. If you’re a warehouse shopper, Costco will be closed on Labor Day, so stock up on your barbecue food on Saturday or Sunday.

Chain restaurants including Olive Garden, Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, and Long Horn Steakhouse will be open on Monday. Before you head out to eat, check Coupon Sherpa for the latest discounts at your favorite restaurant.

Which federal holidays are up next? After Labor Day, there are four more holidays left in 2015. The U.S. Post Office and other government offices will be closed on Columbus Day (October 12), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving (November 26), and Christmas (December 25).
