AMC’s newest zombie apocalypse series, Fear the Walking Dead opened with a record-breaking roar. Over 10 million people watched Episode 1, and more than eight million returned to watch Episode 2. However, considering this show is a companion series to The Walking Dead, there is a certain expectation. Notably, the fact that loved characters will die. But how soon will that happen in Fear the Walking Dead?
Warning: This article contains spoilers about Fear the Walking Dead as well The Walking Dead. If you have not watched all available episodes, please proceed with caution if you want to avoid potential spoilers.
So far, the only people we have seen perish in Fear the Walking Dead is every single male character of African-American descent. While AMC claims this is not intentional, fans are starting to already place their bets in relation to who will die next based on character ethnicity. But, as we get to know each character better, there is always the chance AMC are setting the audience up for a gut-wrenching fall — and this will not be based on race at all. So let’s have a look at the main cast and their odds at surviving Season 1 of Fear the Walking Dead.
Travis Manawa (played by Cliff Curtis): Right from the onset of Fear the Walking Dead, you get the feeling that this show is all about Travis and his new family. But Travis has no noticeable survival skills other than knowing a lot about Jack London’s short story To Build a Fire. While Travis may be able to intellectually analyze the apocalypse, he will need to rely on others to help get him through. However, as we have seen so far, he is pretty handy at getting his truck out of tight spots and is fearless when faced with problems. However, considering how much Travis feels like one of the lead roles, it seems unlikely he will die in Season 1.
Madison Clark (Kim Dickens): Madison is the girlfriend of Travis and is the first of the main characters to make a zombie kill. It seems highly unlikely she will be going anywhere soon as a result of this.
Nick (Frank Dillane) and Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey): These siblings belong to Madison, and while both have had an encounter with the infected, it seems one might fare better than the other. Nick opened Episode 1 of Fear the Walking Dead as he escaped his undead friend, Gloria (Lexi Johnson). He then had to deal with a reanimated dealer by running him over with Travis’ truck. Alicia, however, is more intent on staying with her infected boyfriend rather than see the bigger picture. If one of these siblings has to go, I am placing my money on Alicia getting bitten.
Liza Ortiz (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and Chris Manawa (Lorenzo James Henrie): Liza is Travis’ ex-wife and the mother of their son, Chris. She is a nursing student, so, with her much needed skills, it seems highly unlikely she will die anytime soon in Fear the Walking Dead. However, as we know from The Walking Dead, even useful people like Hershel can die. Her son, however, has no other identifiable skills beyond able to use a camcorder in the age of iPhones. If one of the teenage boys have to go, I am placing my money on Chris.
The Salazars: Daniel (Rubén Blades) and his wife, Griselda (Patricia Reyes Spíndola), moved to America to make a better life for their daughter, Ofelia (Mercedes Mason). These characters were only introduced to Fear the Walking Dead in Episode 2, so it is hard to get a grasp on what they are like yet. But a MoviePilot article pointed out something interesting in the Episode 3 promo video. It seems Griselda might be injured as she lies in the back of Travis’ truck. Liza is also in the back of the truck when it would make more sense for her to be in the front with Travis and Chris. Perhaps she is attending to a bite on Griselda? I also had a fan point out to me that Griselda is the name given to the walker Lizzie “adopted” in Season 4 of The Walking Dead.
Could this be a coincidence? Maybe, especially considering how hard it would be for Griselda from Fear the Walking Dead to get from L.A. to Atlanta during the zombie apocalypse. But it could be pretty smart foreshadowing on AMC’s behalf, though. Another interesting thing to note about Griselda is the fact she is the only main character listed on the Fear the Walking Dead IMDb page that is not listed for at least six episodes. According to IMDb, she will only be present for four episodes. That foreshadowing is suddenly looking more ominous, and my guess is that Griselda will be the first main character to lose her life.
Tobias (Lincoln A. Castellanos): If IMDb is anything to go by, Tobias only survives two episodes of Fear the Walking Dead. However, I think he deserves a mention as AMC didn’t actually kill him off in the second episode. And considering he is the only character who seems to have a clue about what is going on, fans are already starting to speculate he will turn up later on down the track in Fear the Walking Dead, just like Morgan did in The Walking Dead.
Fear The Walking Dead returns to AMC on September 13, 2015.
