A Tennessee babysitter has been arrested after authorities say she was caught on camera brutally abusing a 13-month-old child. HLN News reports that 24-year-old Briana Campbell was captured on home security camera while she was supposed to be babysitting the child. Now, authorities in Asheville are looking for parents of other children to whom she had access.
Campbell has been charged with aggravated child abuse, along with child neglect. The incident reportedly took place on July 31 when she was at the young victim’s home to babysit him. It was fortunate that the parents of the 13-month-old child had installed a security camera to watch the babysitter’s behavior with him. If they had not had the hidden camera, they may not have ever been made aware of just what kind of abuse the little lad had suffered.
WGNS News Radio reports that the assault on the toddler lasted approximately three hours, during which time the babysitter threw him on the couch repeatedly. She was also caught on camera smothering the little boy with pillows. That isn’t the worst of it. Briana Campbell reportedly carried the boy around by his ankles, hanging him upside down. She also beat him in the head and body during the course of the three-hour-assault.
Fortunately for the child, a pediatrician’s exam found that he did not sustain any serious injuries after experiencing at least three hours of violent abuse at the hands of his babysitter. His lack of serious injuries doesn’t mean the law will go easy on this young woman, however. She is currently being held in lieu of $250k bond — a quarter of a million dollars. She is still jailed, unable to make bond at this time. She’s also been charged with at least nine counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of aggravated child neglect. Meanwhile, authorities with Youth Services in Nashville are looking for help from the public in locating other potential victims that this woman may have had access to as a babysitter.
If you recognize or know this woman, or if you know anybody that may have used her as a babysitter, you are encouraged to call Detective Brett Kenney at (615) 862-7471. Any information or tips could be useful in the investigation. It is quite possible that Briana Campbell has abused other children in the homes of unsuspecting parents who were not fortunate enough to have hidden cameras in their homes.
