‘Star Wars: Battlefront’ Beta Inbound, Companion App Announced

Star Wars: Battlefront fans begging for a beta test to try the multiplayer shooter before launch got their wish Tuesday. Electronic Arts announced that a beta test for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC game is just a month away.

The Battlefront beta was announced on the game’s official page, with a planned release date of early October, a little more than a month before the full launch on November 17. Details on exactly how to get in the beta were not shared, so it is unknown if this will be an open beta, if pre-ordering the game will grant access, or if there will be some other requirement.

“Coming early October to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and on Origin for PC, the Star Wars Battlefront Beta is a technical test and will feature Walker Assault on Hoth, a 40-player multiplayer battle featuring Rebels and the Empire. Walker Assault will also give you the chance to play as two of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars universe: Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. The Beta will also feature our Survival Mission on Tatooine, where you and a Rebel friend must fight back waves of Imperial forces.”

A third mode called Drop Zone will be available, as well. This is an unannounced mode that developer DICE plans on sharing details prior to the Battlefront beta launch.

Walker Assault has been the premiere multiplayer mode used to demonstrate Star Wars: Battlefront thus far. It was used to first introduce the game before using the icy Hoth battlefield in the E3 demonstration from June and the subsequent alpha test phase.

Since Star Wars: Battlefront does not have a story-based campaign, DICE is betting on missions to fill the gap. These can be played in single-player or in co-op mode with one other player online or locally via split-screen.

The beta test will be used to test not only Star Wars: Battlefront, but a new companion app, as well. The Star Wars Battlefront Companion Experience app will be available for iOS and Android devices and will feature the Base Command strategic card game.

The app “lets you earn in-game Credits that unlock Star Cards, weapons, and more in Star Wars Battlefront,” according to the EA announcement. “In addition to Base Command, the Companion also lets Rebels and Imperials alike check game stats and progression, customize load-outs and appearance, connect with friends, and get notified when they’re playing Star Wars Battlefront – as well as gather intel on their stats and progression so you can see how you match up.”
