Detroit Pistons rumors are coming from an odd source now. Adonis Thomas has created some Pistons rumors of his own, stating that his new team is ready to make some moves before the 2015-16 NBA season begins. A report from CBS Sports quoted Thomas as he explained his willingness to sign with a team that already had 16 other guys on the roster. It turns out that not all those players will be with the team much longer if he is reporting the information correctly.
“The day I signed my contract, he told me, ‘Hey, I know you’re looking at the roster, at 17 guaranteed guys, and you’re the only non-guaranteed guy or partially guaranteed guy.’ ” Thomas recalled. “He said that anything can change. He said, ‘We’re looking to make some changes soon. We’re not really focused in on who’s on the roster right now. We’re going to let go of maybe some guaranteed guys, or we’re making some changes soon, or trades could be made.’ ”
These Detroit Pistons rumors certainly make sense, especially since the team is trying to move in a new direction. Based on the current roster, one player that might easily be traded is point guard Brandon Jennings. He is coming off surgery and heading into the final season of his contract. Jennings will make just over $8.3 million next year before becoming a free agent. With the recent signing of Reggie Jackson to a huge extension, it would actually make sense to deal Jennings now.
There are also several younger players that the team might look into trading as the franchise turns a corner. One thing that continues to hold back the Pistons, though, is the contract of Josh Smith. He will earn $14 million for this season and the next, making him the highest-paid player on the Pistons for 2015-16. Jackson will pass him next year, when an escalator built into his deal pushes him up near $15 million for the season.
With a core of Reggie Jackson, Andre Drummond, and Stanley Johnson, hopes are again starting to fill the minds of Pistons fans. The addition of Adonis Thomas gives the team even more depth, with the front office hoping his development in the D-League pays dividends. The addition of Danny Granger also adds another threat on offense, but maybe he plays into the new Detroit Pistons rumors. Maybe there is a big trade brewing that includes Brandon Jennings and makes them even better in the short term.
