New ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Footage Reveals Finn With A Lightsaber
A brief clip uploaded to the official Star Wars Instagram account on Thursday has unveiled several new scenes from The Force Awakens, as well as showing who Kylo Ren faces off against in the snowbound duel that first revealed his claymore-inspired lightsaber.
The footage, which takes full advantage of Instagram’s new landscape orientation option, reveals just three scenes from the upcoming seventh Star Wars movie, as Time reports. The first scene depicts the forces of the First Order marshaled in a Nazi-style rally, and though it has previously been featured in a TV spot for the film, the Instagram clip depicts a new angle.

The second scene is equally as brief, showing Daisy Ridley’s Rey looking upward with a concerned expression on her face. Ball droid BB-8 rests on the ground behind her, and the pair appear to be on a forested planet, similar to Endor. Though much of what has been revealed from The Force Awakens has focused on the desert planet of Jakku and the snow-covered world that forms the First Order’s home base, both the new Instagram clip and a recently released picture of Kylo Ren hint at scenes that take place in a green and verdant forest.

The third scene featured in the clip is also familiar to fans, as it depicts Kylo Ren unleashing his crossguard lightsaber in a snow-covered forest. Star Wars fans were divided over this weapon when it first appeared in the film’s earliest teaser, and it has since remained unclear who Ren was preparing to fight in that particular scene. At the end of the new Instagram footage, Finn can be seen igniting his lightsaber in the same forest, apparently preparing to face off against Ren.

When the first poster for The Force Awakens was revealed at Disney’s D23 expo earlier this month, fans were excited to see Finn holding a lightsaber in the image. As Yahoo News points out, this suggested to many of them that Finn is a Force user, if not a new Jedi-in-waiting. The blue blade of the weapon and the familiar hilt have also drawn fans to the conclusion that the lightsaber Finn is holding is the same one that belonged to Anakin Skywalker before his fall to the Dark Side, last wielded by Luke in the original Star Wars trilogy until his duel in Cloud City.
Early rumors regarding the film suggested that Anakin’s lightsaber was central to the plot, and the new Instagram footage has only served to fuel the fires of speculation as fans eagerly await the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18.
