A 12-year-old boy in Milton, Florida is being hailed as a hero, after he saved his four siblings from their burning home on Sunday.
The boy, Justin Jackson, was watching his three brothers and one sister on Saturday night, when lightning caused their power to go out. The boys fell asleep in the living room, and the young girl went to her room.
According to Huffington Post, Justin woke up around 2am to see the curtains on fire. His first thought was saving 5-year-old William, 6-year-old Diego, 9-year-old Emilio, and 3-year-old Brooklynn.
“I knew the house was going to be gone. I knew we had to move…I just picked them up and took them outside and I was knocking on neighbors doors and none of them came out.”
After carting his three brothers outside, Emilio realized that his sister was missing. He said:
“I told him, Brooklynn is still inside!”
Justin ran back into the burning house, rescuing Brooklynn. The children then went to neighbors to call police, however none would respond. Therefore, the 12-year-old ran back into the burning home to call 911.
The Pensacola News Journal reports that Cri Jackson, the boy’s aunt, stated of the incident:
“He ran back in not once, not twice, but three times to save his siblings…he said, ‘I wasn’t even scared of the fire. I was just worried about my family.’ He’s our little hero.”
The boy’s mother, Tiffanie Jackson, was working an overnight shift at the time of the fire, and his father was away on a business trip. Tiffanie told Local-15 that:
“When I saw the flames I was like my house is on fire, I didn’t know what to do. My life is burning up. My babies were in that. There aren’t enough words to describe how proud I am of Justin. He’s my hero…he didn’t worry about himself. He got everybody else out.”
Justin, however, has a different perspective. He told reporters that:
“I was just helping my family.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
