Claire Foy Goes From Anne Boleyn To Another Queen

Claire Foy made a name for herself playing ill-fated queen Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall. After receiving raving reviews for her performance, it is no surprise to historical drama fans to hear that she will play another queen. In a 10-part drama for Netflix, she will take on the role of current queen Elizabeth II, documenting her marriage to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

As the Daily Mirror reports, millions watched Queen Elizabeth’s marriage to the Duke of Edinburgh, and it was only a matter of time before it was created into a drama. Foy will act opposite Matt Smith, best known for his enthusiastic and over-the-top acting in Doctor Who. The series will show the story of the two, including the events surrounding their union — a union that has shaped much of the 20th century.

Foy will wear a replica Norma Hartnell dress. Unfortunately, Westminster Abbey will not be used, disappointing many history fans. Ely Cathedral has been used for filming, instead, possibly due to the lesser effect on the tourist industry.

The Wolf Hall actress was spotted in the replica dress at the cathedral, along with a number of extras and cast members. Matt Smith was not at the set on the day, or at least was not spotted by fans waiting to see the drama. John Lithgow was spotted, who will play Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Actresses playing the queen’s eight bridesmaids and young actors for her page boys were also at the filming location.

Foy can be spotted in the drama, called The Crown, next year on Netflix. It is believed that the program has been developed from stage play The Audience by Peter Morgan. The actress’ previous drama was based on Philippa Mantel’s book, Wolf Hall— the first of two about Thomas Cromwell. Filming started in July this year, and is not expected to finish until March next year. An actual release date has not yet been shared.

Smith has previously been spotted in his costume for the show. The Daily Mail shared photos of him in a shirt, trousers, and suspenders. The slicked hair is just the way the Duke of Edinburgh wore his during the 1950s.

There are expected to be more seasons to the show. The first 10 episodes will be about her marriage and coronation, along with her relationship with Churchill. Each new season will focus on a new decade of her rule, leading to the modern day. It will definitely keep Foy busy, considering Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest reigning British monarch in September, 2015.
