Selena Gomez Is Over Justin Bieber, Says The Internet Needs To Get Over It Too

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s relationship has been internet fodder ever since they got together in 2010. The couple have had quite the roller coaster romance with their on and off again status continuously making headlines. However, in a recent interview, the 23-year-old has given signs that she’s finally moved on and wants the world to let go, too.

“It’s difficult for people to separate us. The internet wants to freeze this moment in time and constantly repeat it.”

Gomez was 18 when she started dating 16-year-old Bieber, and the intense public scrutiny definitely played a part in the end of the young couple. “Jelena” was the young hollywood “it” couple during their time, and that pressure is still unrelenting, even though the couple ended in 2014. Justin, 21, certainly seemed to move on easier than Selena. Britain’s Sunday Times interviewed the “Heart Wants What It Wants” singer recently about that failed relationship, and got a poignant look into the singer’s feelings.

“I didn’t think I was doing anything bad by falling in love. There’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press. Throw in the fact that you’re a teenager – it makes it more difficult.”

During her time with Justin, Selena had also made the decision to remove her purity ring, which had been a fixture in her life since she was 13. The ring was to symbolize her decision to remain “pure” and a virgin until marriage. The decision also caused her some backlash from more conservative groups, but Selena says she does not regret it, in much the same way that she does not regret the relationship with Justin Bieber.

“I’m not embarrassed to say that the ring has come off. I got it when I was 13 and I respect so much what it represented, but it isn’t for everyone.”

Billboard has her going a step further and revealing that there was heartache surrounding the decision to remove the ring.

“Sometimes you have to lie to yourself to get through the criticism, and then you’re in your closet crying. It’s been like that for me a couple of times, but I only want to learn from those things.”

The trials Selena faced as she came of age in such a public manner were always lessened by her personal support, much of which is credited to Taylor Swift.

“I can count on one hand the people I could call and who would be there for me. Taylor is one of the greatest people,” Gomez said. “When I split with my first boyfriend [Nick Jonas] and I was really sad about it, she flew into town with homemade cookies and a bunch of junk food.”

On the cusp of releasing her next album, Revival, in October, Selena is not exactly looking for love right now. But nearly a year without Bieber, Selena seems to be quite happy and is open to love.

“The next relationship will be something dear to me. There is no way I will ever hide my life.”
