What are the odds that you will win the $55 million jackpot? According to National Geographic, you have better odds at getting bitten by a shark (1 in 3.7 million) than winning the Mega Millions (1 in 259 million). Still, the slim odds don’t deter hopeful millionaires from investing $1 on a ticket in hopes that they will be the big winner.
If you beat the odds, you won’t be taking home the full $55 million jackpot. Instead, a one-time lump sum payout will be based on the cash value of the jackpot which is currently $34 million. After federal taxes are taken out, you will be left with approximately $26.1 — and even less if your state taxes lottery winnings.
If you’re not in a hurry to get your big windfall, the lottery offers a 30-year annuity for jackpot winners. USA Mega reports that a winner who chooses the annuity option for the $55 million Mega Millions jackpot would receive annual payments of approximately $1.8 million before taxes. The first check is issued shortly after the winning ticket is verified and future payments are sent out once per year for the next 29 years.
Keep in mind, if another lottery player has a ticket with the winning numbers you will have to split the jackpot. Although multiple winners typically happen on much bigger jackpots because more people play, it’s possible for two more winners to split the smaller jackpots as well.
The biggest jackpot in the history of the game was given away on March 30, 2012 when three lucky lottery players split $656 million. Other sizable Mega Millions jackpots that were split between two or more winners include a $648 million prize share by two winners in December 2013 and a $414 million prize split between two winners in March 2014.
Mega Millions tickets are sold at lottery retailers in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday night at 11 p.m. ET.
