Police Officer Drives Over Suspect Intentionally — But For Good Reason

Suspect Issac Ornelas thought it was a good idea to hop out of his moving car. That is, until a police officer ran him over with his squad car. Yet, it was for everyone’s protection.

Unfortunately, Issac Ornelas found himself on the wrong side of a bad situation on August 21, 2015. The 21-year-old man was seen driving erratically, along with another vehicle. After noticing Issac’s suspicious behavior in the Cadillac Escalade, Colton Police attempted to stop him. However, Highland Community News reports that the suspect accelerated away from the officers.

Although it’s reported that the chase was short-lived, Issac Ornelas ended up within the perimeters of a residential neighborhood, while reaching speeds of 65 miles per hour. However, things began to get even more dangerous when the suspect decided to exit his vehicle while it was still rolling — on the 700 block of South J Street, Colton, California. Yet, even more, Ornelas had a gun in his hand when he came to his feet. It’s believed that this handgun was actually stolen, as reports the source.

While within the confines of the neighborhood, Issac was in close proximity to Urbita Elementary. However, before he could get close enough to cause any potential issues, the officer positioned himself between the suspect and the housing residences.

As reports Press Enterprise, Police officers quickly analyzed the situation and its potential danger to the community. A split-second decision came when Issac Ornelas raised his gun toward the officers and witnesses. That’s when one of the officers simply ran over Issac with his patrol unit. Shortly thereafter, Ornelas’ Escalade rammed into the side of the squad car.

According to Highland Community News, Issac suffered a few injuries during the collision incident. The source quotes as follows.

“Ornelas was treated at the scene by San Bernardino City Fire/Paramedics and then transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was treated for a head injury and a broken leg. He is now listed in stable condition. While at the hospital, it was discovered that Ornelas had illegal narcotics on his person.”

Press Enterprise mentions that, in the police statement, Ornelas was arrested for the following charges:

  1. Investigation of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer
  2. Assault with a firearm
  3. Being an ex-felon in possession of a gun
  4. Possession of a stolen gun
  5. and possession of narcotics.
