Goonies House Closed: Owner Sandi Preston Says The ‘Truffle-Shuffle’ Site Is Closed For Good

Sorry fans, the Goonies house is officially closed, according to its owner, Sandi Preston.

The iconic house, located in Astoria, Oregon, where the cult classic was filmed, sees a steady stream of more than 1,000 visitors each day, coming from all over the world to see the “truffle-shuffle” site.

When Preston purchased the home in 2001, she opened the doors for visitors to come and enjoy the former movie set. However, The Goonies gained such a large following, there ended up being more and more visitors each year, overwhelming the neighborhood and treating the house with disrespect. This year was particularly bad, due to the film’s 30th anniversary. Sandi said an average of 1,000 to 1,500 people arrived at the home each day this summer to celebrate three decades of the movie.

While Sandi said most of the visitors were polite, many were not, littering the neighborhood and destroying other people’s property. Eventually, Preston was forced to put a sign up asking visitors to stay away. She also slammed the city officials for encouraging hundreds of thousands of people to come to The Goonies house. It is reported that the home brought between $2 to $3 million for Astoria’s economy this year alone, the New York Daily News reports.

“Imagine that you buy a house, fix it up, spend money, time and love. Then the city of Astoria encourages hundreds of thousands of people to come and stand in front and view it. This driveway maintained by homeowners sees 1,000-plus people every day. Most are kind, fun and welcome, but many are not.”

A sign was also placed at the end of the street and read, “Access closed to Goonies house.”

“Though I enjoy meeting new people, it’s become very difficult to live here,” she told the news site KGW. “People walk up the driveway and stand in the middle of the access road or driveway and refuse to move when a resident needs to drive up or down.”

Astoria City Councilman Russ Warr, who lives down the street from The Goonies house, said he was surprised she waited this long to close the home. He recalled when she moved in more than a decade ago, saying that Sandi was welcoming at first when the visits were minimal, and now they have just become overwhelming. Not only do the fans show up during the day, they also show up overnight and leave cigarette buts and beer bottles on the lawns.

“They park on the ‘no-parking’ zones, they park on the sidewalks, they relieve their dogs on their lawns,” he said.

There is currently no word on whether or not Sandi will ever reopen the home.
