Since he joined WWE in 2012, Cesaro has been vastly underrated and under-appreciated by WWE management. He’s been stuck in the lower mid-card during his entire WWE tenure, and every time it looks like WWE is finally going to give him the push that he deserves, they pull the rug out from under him.
For several months, Cesaro and Tyson Kidd were the best team in WWE, and they were being given a pretty big push in the tag-team division. But when Kidd suffered a neck injury, nobody really knew what WWE would end up doing with Cesaro. Thankfully, they put him in the ring with John Cena for two straight weeks, and the two matches ended up being match of the year candidates.
Now, WWE is finally recognizing Cesaro’s talent as a singles wrestler, and he’s even main-evented several RAW shows. But that doesn’t surprise Cesaro’s former manager Paul Heyman, as Heyman told CBS Sports that he always knew that Cesaro would rise to the top of WWE, because no matter how hard you try, you can never hold a great talent down forever.
“I’ve always been of the opinion that great talent can’t be held down. I’ve offered Cesaro no more advice than anyone else that has sought out my advice in the locker room. He is one of many. I am a huge, huge fan of his work and I think he has the potential to go all the way. He is back knocking harder than ever because he worked his way back up into that position. And if for some reason he doesn’t get main event status at this attempt, I would expect in 60, 90, 120, 180 days, however many days it takes, he’ll be knocking on the door again. He’s not gonna be denied.”
The fact that WWE hasn’t given Cesaro a full-fledged main-event push during his time in WWE has confused most people. He seemingly has everything that they would want. But as Vince McMahon put it on the Steve Austin Show, Cesaro didn’t have the personality to connect with the fans.
Cesaro said in an interview with Michael Cole that the day after McMahon made those comments, he walked into the chairman’s office and simply told him, “Challenge accepted.” Since then, Cesaro has not only proven himself in the ring, but as a personality as well, and it looks like that after all of this time, he’s on the cusp of being one of WWE’s biggest stars.
