5 Seconds Of Summer: Our Album Title Sounds Like 1980’s Motley Crue

Australian pop-punk band 5 Seconds of Summer make absolutely no secret of their desperation to shake their boy-band label. In their early days 5 Seconds of Summer went out on tour with X-Factor-manufactured boy-band One Direction, something that earned them that boy-band label. They have been struggling to shake the label ever since. There have been signs that 5 Seconds of Summer are being taken more seriously by some in the music industry.

Just months ago 5 Seconds of Summer were labelled as the “world’s worst band” in the NME Awards. Just months later they are headlining arenas across the world and winning rave reviews as they do. It was recently reported in Inquisitr that 5 Seconds of Summer have collaborated with a number of high-profile artists on their new album Sounds Good, Feels Good, which is due for release later this year.

Rolling Stone report that among the artists who have writing credits on the new 5 Seconds of Summer album are members of Good Charlotte, Sum-41, and All Time Low. Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue has also said that he would be prepared to work with 5SOS on writing projects. Now it seems that 5 Seconds of Summer think that the title of the new album sounds like it could have been the title of a 1980’s Motley Crue album.

On Sunday 5 Seconds of Summer won rave reviews after playing their current single “She’s Kinda Hot” at the Teen Choices awards show. After the show they spoke to Billboard, who report that Ashton Irwin told them that the new album is hugely personal to them.

“We all lived in a house together and recorded it and wrote it. We just care about it a lot. It’s definitely an evolution from the last album. It’s a bigger, more rocking sound.”

Guitarist Michael Clifford added that “there’s lots of different s**t on it. It’s really diverse. There are lots of key sounds we go to.” Speaking about the title of the album, Irwin explained that 5 Seconds of Summer feel that the title encapsulates the feel of the whole project.

“‘Feels Good’ came from the beginning of one of the singles we’re about to put out. Luke [Hemmings] said it in the studio after we recorded it. He said, ‘Sounds good! Feels good!’ and we were like, ‘There it is!'”

“It encapsulates the whole album’s sound. It sounds badass. It reminds of, like, an ’80s Mötley Crüe title.”

5 Seconds of Summer are getting a huge amount of coverage at the moment, but it remains to be seen how their sophomore album will be received. As many bands will tell you, that “difficult” second album is often the one that makes or breaks a band’s career. 5 Seconds of Summer and their fans will be looking forward to finding out the answer to that question.
