Tiger Woods To Play Wyndham Championship For First Time

It has been confirmed that Tiger Woods will play in the Wyndham Championship for the first time in his career, ESPN reports.

On Friday, Woods made the deadline for the Greensboro, North Carolina, event, but did not officially confirm that he would be playing the final regular season event on the PGA Tour until today.

“We discussed it in detail over the weekend. It was not appropriate to confirm during the PGA Championship,” Wood’s agent, Mark Steinberg, informed ESPN in an email. “Tiger has heard great things about the event and is looking forward to the week.”

Tournament director Mark Brazil was also excited that Woods would be attending.

The Wyndham Championship, played annually at the Sedgefield Country Club, is a rare addition to Woods’ schedule. The last time the golfer added a new event to his lineup was back in 2012, SB Nation points out. It appears Tiger Woods’ decision to play in the Thursday championship comes with the hope that he will make the cut for the FedEx Cup playoffs. He currently ranks 187th in the FedExCup standings, and is 292 points behind, and would have to place second to make it to the playoffs. But as Woods points out, he’s not hung up on the season.

“I think it’s more just building,” Woods said. “People keep asking me this week, ‘Is it your season?’ No, it’s not really about the season, it’s about the year. I know that we have a different — I haven’t quite come to grips with the whole non-calendar season yet, this whole wraparound thing, so for me I still consider it a year. And I still have plenty of golf to be played for the rest of the year. And as I said, on a global level.”

In other news, Tiger Woods recently celebrated the grand opening of his restaurant, Woods Jupiter, in Florida on August 10. The restaurant reportedly has a Miami beach feel with a menu that entails steak, fish, and plenty of wines to choose from.
