VMAs: Justin Bieber To Perform Lead Single From New Album On Sunday

Justin Bieber is confirmed to perform his new single “What Do You Mean?” live at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday.

MTV made the announcement on Wednesday, which immediately prompted the heartthrob’s fans to send #BieberIsBack to the top of trending topics on Twitter within minutes of the reveal.

“What Do You Mean?” is the lead single from the Biebs’ upcoming, November-releasing new album. It will officially release on August 28 and follows a 30-day, celebrity-assisted countdown.

Bieber will join MTV’s previously announced performers at the VMAs: Pharrell, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, A$AP Rocky, and Twenty One Pilots.

As announced, The Weeknd is set to perform his smash single “Can’t Feel My Face” at the Miley Cyrus-hosted event.

Earlier this week, MTV revealed Kanye West will be presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during the ceremony. Previous recipients of the same award include Beyonce, Britney Spears, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and Jackson himself. It’s unclear whether West will perform at the often controversy-filled event.

Nominees at this year’s VMAs include Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Mark Ronson, Maroon 5, Nick Jonas, and The Weeknd.

Bieber’s music video for “Where Are U Now,” his collaboration with Jack U’s Skrillex and Diplo, is up for three technical awards — Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing. The EDM/Pop banger is also nominated in the VMAs new category: Song Of The Summer.

Bieber first attended the VMAs in 2009, but actually first performed on stage at the 2010 iteration of the event, where he sang hits including “U Smile,” “Baby,” and “Somebody To Love” and won Best New Artist for “Baby.”

At 2011’s edition of the music event, the Canadian won Best Male Video for “U Smile,” and was presented with the award by Kim Kardashian. The then-17-year-old arrived at the event with pet snake Johnson in tow, but it was his PDA with then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, that grabbed headlines.

In 2012, Justin was nominated for a trio of awards for his “Boyfriend,” but failed to win a Moonman.

Fast forward to this year, following a break from the spotlight after a turbulent year-and-a-half, Bieber’s comeback will see the superstar drop new single “What Do You Mean?” on Friday.

Variety reports, Jeremy Scott, a favorite designers of Cyrus, has vamped up the VMAs’ Moonman statue, with pops of colored metals, Scott’s signature winged sneakers, a peace sign necklace, and more.

Shortly before MTV announced Bieber’s upcoming VMAs performance, the singer himself took to Twitter and thanked Cyrus while rolling his latest celebrity countdown, in which he was Photoshopped as a cat in Miley’s arms, then posted a confirming tweet after the network’s reveal.

The VMAs 2015 will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, August 30, from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

It should be a night to remember.
