Nina Dobrev Breaks Hearts With One More Farewell At ‘Teen Choice Awards’ [Video]

Nina Dobrev left The Vampire Diaries months ago when fans watched Dobrev’s character fall prey to a magical spell that has left her sleeping until her best friend, Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham dies. The final episode of The Vampire Diaries sixth season served as a memorial to both Nina and her character Elena Gilbert, but, as chance would have it, that wasn’t the last fans of The Vampire Diaries would see of Ms. Dobrev.

It wasn’t long ago that Dobrev reunited with her two closest friends from The Vampire Diaries cast to celebrate the wedding of one and now Nina has again rejoined the cast of The Vampire Diaries in spirit, if not in person, for the Teen Choice Awards. Ms. Dobrev was present to accept the award for choice TV actress in a sci-fi or fantasy show, but Nina also addressed her departure once again for fans still mourning the loss of The Vampire Diaries’ Elena Gilbert.

Lightening the mood, Dobrev began her speech with a pair of Halloween vampire fangs in her mouth, but soon removed them when they prevented her from speaking clearly.

“That’s right! I don’t need these anymore,” Nina smirked.

“The last few months have been a big change for me,” Ms. Dobrev continued. “Change. It’s a scary word, or I used to think that, because it meant new beginnings. New beginnings with a future that was unknown.”

Dobrev continued her speech as though to remind herself, as well as the audience, why she left The Vampire Diaries and moved halfway across the country to Los Angeles.

“But change is necessary,” continued Ms. Dobrev. “Necessary for you to grow up and learn and to better yourself, becauase everything in life comes to an end. As this chapter of my life comes to an end, I look back at it with a grateful heart, and I smile, because just like my character Elena, I started the show as a young girl, and together we grew up. We’ve grown up and over the last six years we’ve become women.”

Nina also took a moment to thank The Vampire Diaries‘ executive producers in particular, but it was also painfully obvious that Dobrev made no mention of her co-stars. Maybe it just slipped Nina’s mind in the moment.

“These were six incredible years that I had the pleasure of sharing with all of you guys. We wouldn’t be here without you. I wouldn’t be here without you, and I wouldn’t be here without Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson,” Ms. Dobrev said. “They changed my life with this role—sorry, three, four roles. It’s hard to keep track these days. So thank you guys, each and every single one of you.”

Finally, Nina spoke of change, but it was unclear whether Ms. Dobrev was speaking of The Vampire Diaries‘ new season or her own life.

“And remember, change is coming! So hold on and enjoy the ride. It’s going to be fun.”
