Nevada Deputy Killed Responding To Domestic Disturbance

A sheriff’s deputy in Nevada was shot and killed in the line of duty early Saturday morning.

The call reporting a domestic disturbance was made at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. The slain deputy, among others, responded to the call at the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City of Nevada.

Immediately upon arriving at the scene, the deputy found a female in the house that was obviously injured. When he attempted to move toward the male to confront him, the man began shooting at the deputy and other officers.

The Carson City Sheriff, Ken Furlong, issued a statement on the terrible tragedy.

“At 2:18 a.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic battery involving physical injury at the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. As officers arrived at the scene, they reported physical injury to the female. Within minutes, the male suspect came out of the house and opened fire on the officers, killing one. Additional units arrived in the area and secured the residence, evacuating three children (ages 8-13) and one adult. The suspect was located dead at the scene.”

“When deputies arrived on scene, one deputy went to make contact with the male subject, shots were fired between the deputy and the male subject,” officer Tim Broadway of the Reno Police department, one of the officers responsible for taking over the case, said. “This is definitely a tragic day for northern Nevada,”

The three children and women were successfully evacuated and there were no other injuries to them or officers. The suspect was found dead at the scene.

Nevada officials have not offered the cause of death.

“Right now it is an active investigation,” Broadway went on to say. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and to the family and friends of the 9-year veteran deputy who was killed this morning.”

Neighbors were shocked by the tragedy, saying that it’s unusual for anything like that to occur in their area.

“It was chaotic, the police were coming from everywhere,” Scott Harper, one of the witnesses, said to MyNews4. “We just heard some gun shots last night, in the middle of the night, and I came outside and it was pretty scary, they had a [sheriff’s deputy] over here, they were working on him, he had been shot.”

A candlelight vigil for the fallen deputy was held at 8 p.m. Saturday by the Peace Officer Memorial just outside the Nevada State Legislature.
