‘We Are Still Here’ And 3 More Haunted House Horrors You Should Pick Up

We Are Still Here, a 2015 haunted house horror homage, is looking like it may be one of the best reviewed fright flicks of the year, and if you’ve seen House of the Devil, then that will probably come as no surprise.

The same producers responsible for that ’80s cult throwback are behind this terror tale, which looks like it could have been lifted straight from a ’70s grindhouse.

The plot centers on a grieving husband and wife, whose son was killed in a car accident. The wife suspects that her boy may still be with them in spirit when they move into a house with a dark history. Unfortunately for everyone involved, there is definitely an otherworldly presence in the house, but it’s not their son. (Or is it?)

With We Are Still Here now available on iTunes and Amazon and most other major streaming platforms, you may get in the mood to watch it and some of the other films that inspired it. Here’s the trailer along with three others you may want to pick up while you’re at it.

(Warning: some of the trailers below may be a bit violent, so consider them NSFW.)

The House by the Cemetery

The House by the Cemetery from director Lucio Fulci was a heavy influence on We Are Still Here with its mix of haunted house-styled suspense and graphically violent terrors. The plot centers on New York Dr. Norman Boyle, who moves his family to an isolated house in the woods that once belonged to a murderous doctor. His son Bob befriends a girl that only he sees. From her, he receives a warning to get out of the house. Creepy things soon follow.

Ghosthouse

This evil spirit-slasher movie mashup is eerily effective with its dual use of horror movie tropes like a creepy kid and her equally creepy doll. It is a body count film, by and large, but there are some pretty gruesome scenes that are right up there with the final 20 minutes of We Are Still Here. This film was directed by Umberto Lenzi.

The Fog

Okay, so John Carpenter’s original version of The Fog isn’t really a haunted house movie, but it bears striking similarities to We Are Still Here when it comes to the appearance and ferocity of the film’s source of malevolence. There are also some similar twists and turns down the stretch that lend a little levity to the gang of antagonists.
