The predictions of the Straight Outta Compton movie doing big business at the box office began before its opening day. That’s when Fandango reported the pre-sale ticket orders of Straight Outta Compton landed it at the top spot, as reported by the Inquisitr. Already, popular memes being repeatedly used by social media users letting others know what they’re “straight outta” placed the movie in the minds of those who may have been too young to even know N.W.A. during their heyday.
Now Forbes reports that Straight Outta Compton has gained a huge box office tally, pegging it as grossing $24.2 million just for Friday. Those numbers place the Straight Outta Compton movie on pace to out-earn the $29 million it took to make the movie. The amounts also put the movie on track to bring in approximately $57 million for the weekend. Those estimated totals put Straight Outta Compton, a much buzzed-about biopic about N.W.A., on the list as one of the largest movie debuts in August in history.
On Twitter, Straight Outta Compton is trending hard in the top spot, with more than 78,000 tweets coming into Twitter about the ground-breaking movie.
Continual box office updates on sites like Deadline, which track the movie’s most recent box office tally, prove that Straight Outta Compton and its Friday box office haul are legendary. With what the website calls a $24.3 million Friday take, the movie has nabbed the No. 4 highest opening day August release spot.
That means the Straight Outta Compton movie has done better than big movies like Rush Hour 2, which only nabbed $23.1 million in comparison — or movies such as Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $19.5 million.
Online, much is being made about the Straight Outta Compton movie theaters having beefed up security for the premiere weekend — even as moviegoers are reviewing the movie as one of the best they’ve ever seen. Some Twitter users report wanting to see the movie a second time, therefore, expect the banging box office numbers to keep soaring.
According to the Boston Herald, Straight Outta Compton is killing The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with the box office numbers being reported thus far. Saturday and Sunday box office numbers haven’t yet been reported, but if estimates are correct, Straight Outta Compton could usher in plenty more African-American-themed movies from writers and directors willing to give the moviegoing public what they want to see.
