Constantine Maroulis Arrested: ‘American Idol’ Alum Facing Domestic Violence Charges

Constantine Maroulis, American Idol Season 4 alum and current Broadway star, has been arrested on domestic violence charges at his home in Wyckoff, New Jersey, TMZ is reporting.

The 39-year-old Maroulis was arrested early Wednesday morning after his girlfriend and mother of his 4-year-old daughter, identified by E! Online as Angel Reed, called 911. She reported that Maroulis threw her to the ground and kicked her in the groin.

Maroulis, however, claims that he was acting in self-defense, saying that Reed became violent when he told her he was leaving her. Maroulis also claims that Reed threw an object at him, striking him in the leg. Constantine also claims, through his representative, that Reed has been violent with him in the past.

Maroulis’ rep issued an official statement to E! about his client’s arrest.

“[Constantine] did not throw her to the ground or kick her in the groin during this incident. He consequently left their home to protect himself and to diffuse the situation. Some time later, the local police came and arrested him for domestic abuse… Mr. Maroulis intends to defend himself vigorously, as well as protect his child, both in the court of law and, as necessary, in the court of public opinion and is confident that he will be completely vindicated when the truth is known. He thanks his family, friends, fans and supporters for their continued faith and trust in him during this challenging time and assures them that their belief in him is warranted.”

Constantine Maroulis competed on Season 4 of American Idol, wowing the crowd with hard rock performances on a show that otherwise favored pop artists, according to MTV. He made it as far as the top six — Taylor Hicks would eventually be crowned the winner.

After Idol, Maroulis toured for a while with his original band, Pray For The Soul Of Betty, before embarking on a successful solo career. In addition to a handful of TV gigs, Maroulis has been lighting up the stage on Broadway, appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar, Jekyll and Hyde, and perhaps most famously, Rock of Ages. He’s been nominated for a Tony Award for Rock of Ages, and won a Drama Award for Jekyll and Hyde.

After his arrest, Constantine Maroulis posted bail and was released. He has not publicly commented on his arrest as of this post.
