Man Falls 80 Feet: Inebriated Man Rescued After Accidental Fall At Sunset Cliffs

A man fell 80 feet down a cliff at a Southern California beach and survived the incident. He did sustain serious injuries and was flown to a hospital, AFP reports via ABC News.

The victim is believed to be in his 30s and was possibly under the influence of alcohol after his fall at Sunset Cliffs on Tuesday.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that this was the second rescue that San Diego rescue crews and firefighters have made since last Friday.

Fire department spokesman Lee Swanso explains that the man wasn’t with his friends before he decided to climb over a wooden railing, despite warning sign postings. After the man’s fall of 80 feet from the cliff, his friends were calling for help. All of this happened around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Rescuers were able to climb down to the unidentified victim. He was then flown by a San Diego Fire-Rescue-Department helicopter crew to UC San Diego Medical Center, according to the report.

Lifeguards who reached man who fell 80 feet off the cliff say he had severe injuries and “was not breathing very well.” Swanson says that he was conscious, however.

The man’s three other friends said they were in the street area when they got separated. It’s when they went looking for him that they heard him yelling for help.

On Friday, lifeguards had to rescue a man who ran and jumped off a cliff near Osprey Street. He, too, was also believed to be under the influence of alcohol, fire Capt. Joe Amador said.

Apparently, a 25-year-old woman from Chicago was posing for photos from cliffs near Ladera Street in January, 2014. She was in town visiting relatives when the incident happened. Police said at the time that it was a tragic accident, and no alcohol was involved.

It was in just May that another woman fell off the Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, CW 6 reported. She survived, but suffered serious head, neck, and back injuries. She was conscious, like the man who fell 80 feet on Tuesday.

San Diego police officer, Maria Whittaker, said that the woman fell around 5:20 p.m. in the area of Hill Street and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. She was said to be about 50-years-old and was airlifted to a hospital.

The Inquisitr has a variety of stories of men and women falling off cliffs in California. It seems to be an epidemic in a lot of popular areas in the U.S.
