Arsenal Transfer News: Will Wenger Splash The Cash After Horror Defeat?

After being touted as possible contenders to dethrone Chelsea, Arsenal fell to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham. That defeat meant that Arsenal have only won one of their last six opening day matches.

Arsenal’s last defeat on the opening day of the season came at home to Aston Villa in 2014. However, that defeat sparked a massive rush to spend in the transfer market and now Arsene Wenger could be tempted to do the same as well.

Arsenal could now turn to two Real Madrid players, Karim Benzema and Lucas Silva. According to reports, Lucas Silva could be on his way to Arsenal in spite of joining Real Madrid in January.

The Brazilian midfielder has failed to impress his manager and has just made nine appearances for the club. Arsenal is looking for an adequate holding midfielder with just Francis Coquelin and Mathieu Flamini with the latter still fighting to prove his worth at the club.

Arsenal is also known admirers of Karim Benzema yet the London club refuse to meet Real Madrid’s asking price despite having the money to do so.

Although Arsenal’s humbling loss to West Ham United will certainly be a reality check for the Gunners.

“We will respond to that accident,” Wenger said.

“The players were maybe too nervous and put too much pressure on themselves. Today we have been hurt mentally and it is a good opportunity to respond. We were not convincing offensively or defensively. I knew it could be a tricky game. If you can’t win the game, make sure you don’t lose it.”

Arsenal’s last defeat on the opening day of the season was overturned with a nine game unbeaten streak. In that period, Mesüt Özil was brought in from Real Madrid.
