JaVale McGee rumors now have the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks as frontrunners to sign him. McGee rumors have been floating around since the last NBA season, with the free agent big man continue to weigh his options in the league. A report from NBC Sports on Saturday (August 8) states that he is now considering options from these two teams. It’s very clear how he could help both rosters for the 2015-16 NBA season and beyond.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Lakers traded for center Roy Hibbert and also have Julius Randle and Tarik Black on the roster. There are still rumors that Robert Upshaw will also sign a contract, showing that there are a lot of bodies residing in Los Angeles. While McGee would likely still get minutes, he would have to compete with a lot of other players to be an important part of the rotation coach Byron Scott decides to use.
With the Dallas Mavericks, these JaVale McGee rumors make even more sense, as the team was spurned by DeAndre Jordan during NBA free agency. The front office had spent a lot of time focused on Jordan after he committed to going there, and when he opted to return to the LA Clippers, it left a big hole on the roster. If McGee were to get healthy again in the short-term, he could possibly even take on a starting role in Dallas.
McGee, 27, has been battling leg injuries the past few seasons, cutting into the effectiveness he had on the court for the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers. NBA general managers still hope he can return to the form he was at in the 2011-12 NBA season (when he was 24), as he averaged 11.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game. He averaged 25.2 minutes a game that season with the Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets.
A few years later, McGee still has his size, but how many games he can play in a season will remain questionable. It’s not shocking that a team hasn’t offered him a lot of money, but he could slide into a good situation with either the LA Lakers or Dallas Mavericks. Both Western Conference teams have an improved shot at making the 2016 NBA Playoffs, but with no guarantees yet, these JaVale McGee rumors might drag into the month of September before he decides to sign somewhere.
