Fat Cat Meow Dies From Obesity Complications

Meow, a 39-pound cat who became an internet sensation due to his enormous size, passed away this weekend from complications related to obesity.

USA Today reports that Meow, a two-year-old Tabby (some reports say that the cat was closer to 5-years-old), was reportedly the nation’s fattest cat. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society made the announcement on its Facebook page, writing:

“Dear Friends, I am devastated to share with you that the respiratory distress that Meow was experiencing last week (the reason we did not do his weigh-in) took his life at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. The Shelter staff – along with all those who met Meow during his short time with us – mourn his passing.”

Meow was brought to the shelter after his elderly owner could no longer take care of him. The big cat went on a weight loss program and was able to lose two pounds during his stay at the shelter. Sadly, Meow started experiencing breathing problems on Thursday and passed away this weekend.

Veterinarians at the shelter put Meow through a series of tests but doctors were not able to save him.

Mary Martin, the Santa Fe shelter’s executive director, writes:

“Although four different veterinarians worked with Meow, we were unable to stop the progression of what turned out to be pulmonary failure…. We will forever be grateful for the attention Meow’s size brought to pet obesity and to animal shelters across the country.”

The shelter said that it wasn’t sure how Meow gained so much weight but said that it was likely caused by a high calorie diet and low activity.
