If you’re expecting Katherine Heigl to come back to Grey’s Anatomy to wrap up Dr. Izzie Stevens’ line, then you’ll be sadly disappointed. Fans were excited and hopeful when the actress commented a few years back about wanting to return to revisit the character. Heigl didn’t leave Grey’s Anatomy on good terms, thus making a very abrupt leave of absence of a very beloved character.
That said, series creator Shonda Rhimes is over Katherine Heigl (which we already knew from previous comments), and over the idea of Izzie ever being revisited. In fact, she told TV Line’s Michael Ausiello that it isn’t happening. Since Heigl’s departure, TV Line’s Ausiello has championed Izzie and Alex’s love story getting a decent wrap up.
So with that, Ausiello decided to bring up the possibility of Heigl’s return to the series creator, and before he could get the whole question out, his dreams were dashed.
Ausiello wrote about his Katherine Heigl pitch.
“But a mere three seconds into my pitch — for the record I was proposing a one- or two-episode comeback stint — Rhimes shut me down. Hard.”
“‘No,’ she interjected, shaking her head and leaving little room for me to wiggle. ‘I’m done with that story. I’ve turned that idea over in my mind a thousand times and thought about how it would go. And I don’t think so.'”
This isn’t the first time the Izzie arc on Grey’s has been brought up. Back in June, when Heigl was promoting her new film, she changed her tune completely and shut down any chance of her appearing on the show again. “There’s not. I’m sorry..I think that’s–I don’t know how to answer that.”
Perhaps this is exactly why she won’t return. All seemed to be well, time had passed since Heigl abruptly left the show, and just when it seemed like Katherine was considering returning to the show, Shonda Rhimes made it clear that she was having none of Heigl’s old behavior welcomed back on the set. “There are no Heigls in this situation. I don’t put up with bu*****t or nasty people. I don’t have time for it.” She continued that she has a “no a–holes policy.”
Heigl, along with the rest of the world, heard of these comments and said, “The last one with Shonda… it sucks. I am sorry that she feels that way and I wish her nothing but greatness, and I have nothing negative to say about Shonda. I’m a big fan of her work. I watch ‘Scandal’ every week, and so I’m sorry she’s left with such a crappy impression of me. I wish I could do something to change that. Maybe I will be able to someday.”
Looks like these two will never make up.
