Lexi Shymanski, 5-Year-Old Girl Who Saved Family After Car Crash, Is A ‘Little Hero’

Lexi Shymanski, a 5-year-old girl who saved her mother and baby brother after a car crash, is being called a hero for her actions during extremely difficult circumstances.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Lexi Shymanski was driving with her mom and young brother, Peter, from a vacation in the Calgary area in Canada when Angela Shymanski began feeling extremely tired while behind the wheel. She thought of pulling over until it passed, but she was never able to make it, and the car crashed.

The family SUV ended up in a 40-foot ridge and crashed into a tree. Angela suffered internal injuries and a broken back, and was unconscious immediately after the accident. Lexi Shymanski woke up as her little brother was crying and realized she needed to get out and get help. So she did.

Incredibly, the 5-year-old girl was able to unlatch her five-point harness in her car seat — which was smashed against the seat in front of her from the force of the crash — and open the door. She climbed up the steep embankment and rugged terrain without any shoes, according to Metro News.

Once she got to the top of the hill, she got the attention of another driver — who hiked down the hill to help — however, he was unable to get Angela out. He went back up the embankment and waved at another driver, who was a paramedic and was able to help the family.

Lexi Shymanski’s mother is incredibly proud and thankful of her brave daughter.

“It’s crazy. I only can remember one or two times where she got out of her five-point harness previously. She somehow got out, adrenaline or whatever, and barefoot hiked up the embankment.

It’s amazing and we’re just so glad she did that.”

The 5-year-old had only minor injuries. However, she’s been complaining of neck pain and has nightmares, her mom says. They were all airlifted to the hospital where Peter needed neurosurgery to reduce swelling in the brain. The mother of two — who is a swim instructor — broke her back in two places, had surgery for internal bleeding, and had to have some organs removed.

Lexi Shymanski, her mom, and her brother stayed at the hospital for 19-days and are now recovering. Despite all the attention, the 5-year-old is unaware of how important her actions on the day of the accident are.

“She just doesn’t know what it means,” Lexi Shymanski’s mother — who had to be resuscitated twice — said. “She’s just 5 years old and so happy to be home and playing with her dog and her ducks.”
