Bindi Irwin Is Anti-Makeup No Longer, But Khaki Selfies Are Here To Stay

What a difference a year can make. It was not too long ago that Bindi Irwin was chastising girls for wearing makeup or revealing clothing. But then she posted a selfie of herself wearing dark red lipstick and heavy eyeliner. So what does Steve Irwin’s daughter say about fashion now?

In a related report by the Inquisitr, Bindi Irwin’s boyfriend has been confirmed. In addition, Bindi also explained the conditions her father set for any future boyfriend.

The reason that Bindi was considered anti-makeup at one point was due to Irwin’s criticism of girls who choose to wear makeup while still young.

“I look at adults and they say ‘when I was young I was wearing blue eye shadow’ and I’m cringing. So to be able to have that outlook on life is such a blessing and I’ve gotten that from my mum especially … The way I choose to dress, I want to influence other people around me I suppose.”

Bindi believed her peers should be ashamed of wearing skimpy clothing, and she claimed many young girls would look back at their older photos and “cringe.”

“I’m a big advocate for young girls dressing their age … I mean, for me, I look around at a lot of young girls that are my age and they’re always trying to dress older. Whether it’s wearing revealing clothes or hardly wearing any clothes at all, I feel really bad for them,” Bindi said. “It kind of has the opposite effect in some ways … it kind of does the opposite where it makes you look younger and like you’re trying too hard.”

Perhaps it’s only natural for her opinion to evolve now that she has a boyfriend, but she told Sunday Style how she has been experimenting lately.

“I want to try different styles,” Irwin said. “Khaki is a part of who I am, but it’s fun to get dressed up every now and then. Being a bit of a girl is always exciting. You can’t jump on a croc or climb a tree if you’re not in khaki, but I do like different clothes and playing around with it a bit.”

Fast forward to 2015, and Bindi Irwin’s Instagram photo made it quite clear that makeup was now an option.

“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself,” Bindi wrote about her selfie, which features her wearing eye makeup and lipstick. She then added a favorite quote of hers: “‘What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.’ – S. Westerfeld.”

Speaking about the reaction to the selfie, Bindi explained that she was “amazed” how much it “exploded” all over the internet.

“I was amazed at how much it exploded — I didn’t expect that,” she says. “I really didn’t ever post selfies before, but it occurred to me, after talking to some friends, how much pressure is put on young people to look and act a certain way. We’re all growing up and changing. I wanted to tell young girls — and boys — to stay true to who you are and not let anyone change you. You have to be able to accept yourself and know you’re gorgeous inside [and] out. It’s hard sometimes.”

The responses to Bindi Irwin’s photo was mostly positive, but Irwin admits reading negative comments was quite hurtful.

“It’s human nature that if you get 20 positive comments and one negative one, you’re going to focus on the negative,” she says. “We all do that. It can be something that drags you down. It’s easy to get bogged down with it, but I try to concentrate on the good things.”

But Bindi Irwin says fashion won’t drag her down. She plans on finishing school, including courses in business and tourism. When she graduates, she plans on working full time and helping out with management at the Australia Zoo.
