Gwyneth Paltrow Is Not Responsible For The Phrase ‘Conscious Uncoupling’

Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t want to claim the phrase “conscious uncoupling,” which has been used countless times in reference to divorces and splits.

The phrase was introduced the world on March 25, 2014, when Gwyneth Paltrow announced her split from husband Chris Martin on her blog. During her interview with Fast Company, the 42-year-old actress says that she wasn’t the one who came up with the phrase “conscious uncoupling” to announce their shocking breakup. Instead, Paltrow places the blame on the editorial director of her lifestyle site, Goop.

“When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Goop editorial director Elise Loehnen], titled the piece ‘Conscious Uncoupling’ and I had no idea.”

She did like that the term got everyone talking about divorce, which is still kind of taboo to this day.

“When something like that happens, I think everybody is like, ‘Oh s**t.’ I just tell them that I think we are creating interesting discussions.”

However, that didn’t stop Gwyneth from becoming sort of a cheerleader for “conscious uncoupling.” During her interview on Howard Stern’s radio show, the Oscar winner talked about the benefits of breaking up with a partner. Gwyneth also shared an article that talked about the process of “conscious uncoupling” by Dr. Habib Sadeghi and Dr. Sherry Sami on her website.

But “conscious uncoupling” isn’t the only term that Paltrow has introduced to the world. She also made people talk about “vaginal steaming,” when she recommended it to her fans. An article on the infamous Goop site talked about the strange beauty treatment that’s offered at an exclusive L.A. spa.

Not only did it open up the discussion for “vaginal steaming,” but it also led to some negative reviews and backlash about the bizarre — and unnecessary — vaginal beauty treatment. Some have compared to the likes of vaginal douching, which doctors have urged against for years. Paltrow has defended Loehnen for writing and publishing the “vaginal steaming” article. She finds nothing wrong with it.

“This is a thousands-of-years-old practice in Korean spas. It feels good, it’s not harmful — it’s not like we’re urging people to go out and buy AK-47s.”

Gwyneth previously revealed that she doesn’t do it to feel rejuvenated and pretty. She does it to do balance out her hormones.

“It is an energetic release — not just a steam douche — that balances female hormone levels. If you’re in L.A., you have to do it.”

Gwyneth Paltrow graces the cover of the September issue of Fast Company, which is available for digital release on August 3 and hits newsstands on August 10.
