New York Yankees Trade Rumors: Martin Prado May Be Headed To The Yankees

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the New York Yankees are showing interest in trading for a second baseman that would be a dramatic step up from their current player at that position, Stephen Drew. Drew is hitting a measly.199 this season over 91 games played.

The New York Yankees are pursuing an August trade that involves Miami Marlins second baseman Martin Prado. After all of the Yankees infield plans fell through last week, before the July 31 trade deadline and all of the Blue Jays upgrades, New York realizes they need to upgrade one of their own weaknesses.

Ben Zobrist was a major target of the New York Yankees, but once he was dealt to the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees realized they needed to intensify their search. Martin Prado may be the perfect option for New York. Prado can help the organization maintain their 5-and-a-half game lead over both the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.

Prado is a formidable upgrade for the Yankees, as he is hitting.273/.312/.369 in 73 games this season in Miami. This is a significant upgrade of all the other options the Yankees have attempted.

Many things would have to go right for the New York Yankees to complete this deal. For no apparent reason, Joe Girardi seems committed to Stephen Drew, with some combination of Brendan Ryan and their newest import, Dustin Ackley, while Rob Refsnyder seems out of the picture. Also, it might be tough for the New York Yankees to have a shot at Prado, given he is making just $11 million this season, and the Yankees will be far down the waiver wire.

The Marlins have made it clear that they are sellers this season, after trading Mat Latos, Dan Haren, and Michael Morse last week, and Martin Prado is another sizable contract they could unload.

The New York Yankees were heavily linked to the San Diego Padres before the deadline, which included players like Craig Kimbrel, James Shields, Ian Kennedy, Jedd Gyorko (another second baseman), and Joaquin Benoit. Those players may still be on the block, and the Yankees may pursue them during the month of August.

Do you think the New York Yankees will make a transaction in order to acquire Martin Prado? If not, what other moves do you see the Yankees making during this month of August?
