Gun Safety Lesson Goes Badly For Florida Man And Daughter

A gun safety lesson between a Florida man and his daughter ended on a not-so-positive note on Sunday night. The Huffington Post reports that the unidentified man shot his 12-year-old daughter during the lesson, and now the incident is being investigated regarding whether or not it was an accident.

A neighbor reportedly heard the gunshot and looked outside to see that the 12-year-old had been shot. She described to the police and the media what she saw when she looked in the direction of the gunshot.

“There was blood running down her leg. She had white shorts on, so you could tell her whole front and side were full of blood.”

The 12-year-old girl was reportedly shot in the arm by her father when he attempted to show her how to draw the firearm. NBC News 6 out of Florida reports that CPS workers are now investigating the case. However, no charges have been filed against the Florida man, and no arrests have been made.

This is not the only gun safety accident to make the news in recent years. In fact, some that were considered accidents have also ended up turning into murders and attempted murders. In February of this year, a man in Portland accidentally fired through his apartment wall into his neighbor’s apartment while practicing gun safety. Also this year, a South Dakota man was shot and killed during a target shooting accident. There is also the high profile case involving an older man who claimed the fatal shooting of his wife was an accident. Authorities in Washington charged him with manslaughter, however.

These examples don’t include the numerous accidental gun injuries and deaths that take place every year in the United States. From 2005 to 2010 a staggering 3,800 Americans died from accidental shootings. Even more disturbing, Salon reports that American children under 14-years-old are 17 times more likely to die by gun violence than in other industrialized countries. Regarding accidental gun deaths, American children are 9 times more likely to die than in other countries.

Gun safety lessons are designed with the intent to prevent these tragic accidents, but that doesn’t mean that accidents don’t happen. It’s also true that incidents like these involving guns — and especially children — tend to spark debate between those who argue the importance of tighter gun laws. Regardless of the ideology clashes that surround this topic, it’s more than evident that the United States accounts for three-fourths of all child murders on the planet — and many of those involve firearms. Does this mean that new legislation should be introduced to enhance gun safety measures? Or is there really no guarantee that accidents won’t happen in regards to handling firearms?
