Dr. Dre Announces Release Date of New Album After 16 Years: ‘Compton, A Soundtrack’

Fans of the rap super star and mogul Dr. Dre have long been waiting for a new album and can now finally rest easy. Dre announced that Compton: A Soundtrack will be released and available for download on iTunes and Apple Music on Aug. 7. Previous information regarding the album release came by way of Ice Cube, who is a featured artist on said album but had stated the release would be on Aug. 1.

The official revelation regarding the new album date was done during Dr. Dre’s Beat 1 radio show: The Pharmacy on Saturday.

Dre says that Compton was inspired by the upcoming N.W.A. biopic movie Straight Outta Compton. The album will drop ahead of the movie and is actually available for pre order on iTunes. Straight Outta Compton is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 14.

Dre’s last album was titled 2001 and was actually released in 1999. For the past decade rumors have been swirling that Dr. Dre was said to be releasing another album, titled Detox but that has officially been scrapped.

“I didn’t like it. I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you.” he said of Detox. “I worked my ass off on it, and I don’t think I did a good enough job. I just wasn’t feeling it”

Dre Dre, whose birth name is Andre Romelle Young, said he became inspired during the filming of Straight Outta Compton and started working on the album Compton: A Soundtrack but kept that information hidden for the most part.

“I was leaving the set, coming to the studio and I felt myself just being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album. I kept it under wraps and now the album is finished.”

N.W.A. was Dr. Dre’s radical rap group that came about in the late 1980’s. From his humble roots Dre has grown to become a multimillionaire, rising not only in the music industry but also as a developer. Along with his trademark Beats headphones he has a range of other audio products under the name Beats Electronics. Apple bought the company last year for US $3.2 billion. The Sun Daily informs us that Forbes estimates Dr. Dre net worth as being US $700 million.

Compton: A Soundtrack will feature multiple collaborations with a variety of artists, including Dr Dre’s protege Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Jill Scott and Kendrick Lamar.
