Sherlock In Victorian Christmas Special Is Less Rude, Watson More Uptight

Sherlock Holmes fans are still many months away from season 4 of BBC’s Sherlock Holmes series, so it’s only fair that Sherlock fans are treated to a special episode.

Announced at the last San Diego Comic-Con, the Victorian themed Sherlock Holmes special episode will be a one-off special Sherlock episode separate from the three-part series of season 4. The modern day Sherlock Holmes seen in the TV series was immensely loved by millions of fans the world over, but Sherlock Holmes showrunner Steven Moffat thinks that the Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode will be a breath of fresh air for Sherlock Holmes fans.

Moffat was spotted at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press event sharing details about the upcoming Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode, IGN reports. The inspiration for the special episode, he shares, just came out of the blue while shooting for Sherlock Holmes season 4.

“[We’re doing it] just because we can, really. Mark [Gatiss] and I were having a fun day on set because he was doing some second unit shooting with some evil monks. It was the prequel, and because I think we found an old prop that was on the original Titus, so we were having a geek day. And then we just thought, ‘could we ever just do maybe one scene or some dream sequel or something?’ And then we just thought, you know, ‘why don’t we just do it? Why don’t we just do a Victorian one?'”

Ergo, the Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode. Moffat goes on to expound how Sherlock Holmes will be different in this special episode since it will be set in a different era. He shares that Sherlock will have the manners of a Victorian gentleman, something that he absolutely doesn’t have in the modern Sherlock version, while Dr. Watson will be more uptight than he usually is. Moffat stressed that the Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode will absolutely contain the same kind of humor and take as the modern Sherlock show, only relocated to the “correct” era.

“They’re the same people, seen through the prism of a different time and fitting in to a different society. I would say this Sherlock is a little more polished, and he operates like a Victorian gentleman instead of a posh, rude man, which he does in the modern too.”

Slash Film also reports another special tidbit to look forward to in the upcoming Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode is that the episode will be a hallmark Arthur Conan Doyle ghost story. Moffat says that they haven’t done enough scary chillers with the modern Sherlock Holmes and doing a Victorian episode will be an appropriate setting for that.

The Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode was already teased at the San Diego Comic-Con with a short snippet, but no official date for release was still announced. Moffat is promising a release date sometime in December since it’s a special Christmas episode. The Victorian Sherlock Holmes special episode will also be showing in select theaters at the same time as its TV broadcast.
