‘The Avengers’ Pulls In $20 Million At Midnight Showings

A few months ago “The Hunger Games” set all sorts of box-office records. Well, there could be a new challenger in town. “The Avengers” opened to a huge audience during its North America midnight debut, pulling in close to $20 million.

The official numbers aren’t in yet but Cinema Blend reports that the new superhero movie brought in between $18 and $20 million during its midnight showings. Inside Movies estimates that “The Avengers” grossed $18.7 last night.

“The Avengers” opening night wasn’t a record breaking affair but it does put the movie alongside some elite company. “The Hunger Games” opened to $19.7 million (brought in $152 million during opening weekend), and “The Dark Knight” earned $18.5 million on its debut ($158 million during its opening weekend.

“The Avengers” is on pace for a $150 million weekend and could end up topping “The Hunger Games” and “The Dark Knight.” It may have a hard time topping “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” however, which had a $169.2 million opening weekend.

But Marvel won’t be too disappointed if “The Avengers” doesn’t break any records. The movie has already brought in more than $300 million overseas.

According to Cinema Blend, “The Avengers” is well ahead of Marvel movies like “Captain America” ($4 million during midnight screenings), “Thor” ($3.25 million), and “Iron Man 2” ($7.5 million).

The movie has also received rave reviews. So far, critics have given the movie a 93% positive rating.

The NY Daily News writes:

“This mega-entertaining “Avengers” film is something comic fans have dreamed of since Marvel debuted the title almost 50 years ago.”

Do you think “The Avengers” will set a box office record?
