‘Super Smash Bros.’ Update Brings New Tournaments, YouTube Into The Brawl

Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS has received a much-anticipated patch that includes the ability to upload saved gameplay replay videos directly to YouTube along with two new tournament modes. Update 1.1.0 is required for all multiplayer activities in the game going forward. Nintendo highly-recommends players take advantage of the free update and provides instructions to do so for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U on their customer support pages.

Community Tournaments and Regular Tournaments are the two new tournament modes added with the Super Smash Bros. update. Regular Tournaments are 16 player bracket-style tournaments held at Nintendo’s discretion and according to Nintendo’s rules. Players can enjoy Community Tournaments any time with greater control over battle parameters. As reported by Kotaku, although Smash players in general welcome the addition of new modes, many have been disappointed with Nintendo’s execution of the latest tournament offerings.

In addition to the free update, additional downloadable content is also available for purchase. The “Hyrule Castle” and “Peach’s Castle” stages cost $1.99 USD each per console or can be bought for both Wii U and 3DS at a reduced price of $2.99 USD each. The two stages hail from the original Nintendo 64 Super Smash Bros. days.

A plethora of costumes come with the update as well. All players get a free Mii Fighter costume of Animal Crossing‘s K.K. Slider. Notable paid DLC additions include Mii Fighter costume sets for King K. Rool of Donkey Kong fame, Samus from Metroid, Chrom from Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia. A complete listing per Nintendo’s official news page details all the purchasable costumes.

Hoodie: A hoodie printed with the SSB logo. For use with all Mii Fighter types!

Bear Suit Set: A Super Smash Bros. exclusive costume for Mii Fighters. We know, we know—the wait has been unbearable.

King K. Rool Set: Has your Mii Fighter always dreamed of being king of the Kremlings? Now your Mii Fighters can realize their true destiny with this King K. Rool costume!

Flying Man Set: Give your Mii this eye-catching red and yellow outfit straight from the EarthBound series! The only ones in grave danger now are your opponents!

Chrom Set: Don the mantle of Ylissean royalty with this outfit from Fire Emblem Awakening. Arm yourself with the divine Falchion, and become a force to be reckoned with!

Black Knight Set: This outfit for Mii Swordfighters comes with a black helm and an equally black suit of armor. It’s perfect for when you don’t think your Mii looks intimidating enough.

Lloyd Set: Tales of Symphonia comes to Smash—now you can kit out your Mii in the style of Lloyd Irving! (You’ll have to find your own Exsphere.)

Samus’s Armor: We’re not saying anybody can be a galactic bounty hunter, but your Mii will definitely feel like one with Samus’s distinctive armor (and helmet if you haven’t unlocked it yet)!

If you want Nintendo to hurry up and take all your money, all of the new Super Smash Bros. DLC can be purchased together as part of the digital Collection No. 3 for both systems at a price of $15.18 USD. Each console bundle can be purchased separately for $9.98 USD each.
