Royals’ Edinson Volquez Calls Josh Donaldson A Baby
The Kansas City Royals and the Toronto Blue Jays tussled on the field on Sunday and then Edinson Volquez continued the sparring, this time verbally, going after Josh Donaldson. Volquez plunked Donaldson in the first inning and the All-Star third baseman took exception to it.
During the game, cameras caught Volquez rubbing his eyes and pretending he was crying like an infant. The Kansas City Star is reporting that Edinson didn’t think much of Donaldson’s on field reaction.
“He’s a little baby. He was crying like a baby.”
Then Volquez reminded Donaldson that he needs to put in a bit more time before he can spout off that way.
“He got mad at everybody like he’s Barry Bonds. He’s not Barry Bonds. He’s got three years in the league. We’ve been around longer than he has.”
Donaldson, of course, had his own interpretation of what went down. The Toronto Star is reporting that Josh felt he got hit on purpose.
“I’ve been thrown at several times in my career, I know when it’s intentional. When a ball’s thrown right at you, you know if it’s intentional or not.”
After Donaldson was done with Volquez he went after umpire Jim Wolf.
“There was a warning given out after he hit me in the first at-bat. Guys get hit all the time. You don’t see warnings thrown out all the time, but the reason he did it is because he knew just as well as I did, he hit me on purpose. So (Wolf) had two decisions to make right there: One, he could’ve thrown him out immediately right there. When you see balls continually thrown around the head area and then a ball that hits Tulowitzki in the chest it’s one of those things where you can’t question intent anymore. There has to be repercussions for you giving a warning at the beginning, and I think that’s where he went wrong at it. And then our guy loses a two-seamer and hits a guy in the knee when we’ve had four balls thrown at our neck the entire day and our guy gets ejected. It just doesn’t seem proper.”
When the dust settled after all the donnybrooks, the Blue Jays came away with a 5-2 victory.
Both of these teams have playoff aspirations and both were busy at the trade deadline. As reported on earlier at the Inquisitr, the Royals landed Ben Zobrist and also dealt for starter Johnny Cueto. The Blue Jays added shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and ace pitcher David Price. It is possible these two teams will meet again come playoff time.
