Watch Washington Nationals Vs. New York Mets Live Online: Battle For NL East 1st Place, Streaming

Baseball fans can watch a battle for first place in the National League East live online when the Washington Nationals visit the New York Mets Sunday night, with the Mets looking to put the finishing touches on a three-game weekend sweep of the division-leading Nationals — their first three-game sweep of the Nats in more than six years -- if they can pull it off.

The Nationals entered the weekend set at Citi Field leading the Mets by three games in the NL East race, but two Mets victories in two days closed the gap to a single game, meaning that a win Sunday by New York moves the Mets into virtual tie for first, though with the Mets having played two more games than Washington they would technically trail by fractions of a percentage point.

The Mets' offense has been a disaster in the 2015 season, scoring just 368 runs through the team's first 104 games — dead last in the 15-team National League. But the Mets' young pitching staff has allowed only 373 runs, third-best in the league, with a team ERA of 3.25, also third-best in the NL.

The Mets send one of their best young pitchers, in a corps of great arms, to the mound on Sunday night in 22-year-old Noah Syndergaard (pictured above), whose ERA of 2.70 would place him 10th in the NL, except that with just 86 2/3 innings pitched this year Syndergaard does not qualify for the ERA lead.

But 20 of those innings have come in Syndergaard's last three starts, which have seen him post just a 1.35 ERA, fanning 19 while walking six. The youngster has been nearly unhittable in the Mets home park recently, with a 0.90 ERA and 3-0 record in his last four home starts.

"I don't think any of us could have predicted the rise to where he's at this fast," said Mets Manager Terry Collins on Saturday.

Syndergaard faced the Nationals on the road just 12 days ago, restricting them to a single run in five innings for a no-decision.

The Nationals counter with 29-year-old, seven-year veteran Jordan Zimmerman, who brings an 8-6 record and 3.36 ERA to Sunday night's crucial showdown
