New Netflix Movies And TV Streaming In August: ‘Dr. Who,’ Plus Original Series ‘Narcos’ Top Slate

The popular online video streaming service Netflix offers a full slate of new movies and TV shows, including Netflix originals, in August — plenty of selections to keep any viewer occupied throughout the remainder of the summer and into the post-Labor Day back-to-school season.

Sci-fi buffs will delight in the latest season of Doctor Who, starring 57-year-old Scottish actor Peter Capaldi as the 12th incarnation of the character who has become an institution on U.K. television — and an icon for science fiction fans worldwide. The new Doctor Who debuts on August 8.

Also in the fantasy realm, the fourth season of the hit ABC TV series Once Upon A Time appears on Netflix on August 28, barely leaving time to take in all 23 episodes before Labor Day rolls around and the summer season comes to a close.

But perhaps the most exciting offering on Netflix in August is not a fantasy at all. The 10-episode original Netflix series Narcos recreates the bad old days of the 1980s when Colombia cocaine cartels held their own country in a reign of terror and flooded the United States with the drug, setting off a crime wave and drug epidemic that devastated many of America’s cities.

At the top of the drug pyramid was Colombia kingpin Pablo Escobar, the central figure in Narcos, a series that the Independent newspaper calls, “one of hottest – and most original – TV offerings to grace the small screen for some time.”

Narcos also goes online August 28. Of course, the new Netflix comedy Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, featuring a lineup of top Holywood comedy stars, is also available in August, hitting Netflix on July 31.
