One Direction’s ‘Drag Me Down’ Is An Instant Massive Hit At iTunes

One Direction surprised everybody with the sudden release of “Drag Me Down” on Friday. The reviews have been mixed. Billboard gave cautious praise to 1D’s new single.

“The song hums along with a playful back-and-forth between the guitar and bass, and if the hooks aren’t as delectable as they are on the group’s past hits, they at least come close.”

Music Times was thrilled with One Direction’s new song.

“Musically, ‘Drag Me Down’ is the epitome of an arena anthem with hand claps slowly building in the chorus that are sure to power the rest of 1D’s On The Road Again Tour. The song also has one of the more fulfilling drops in One Direction’s career, with a searing energy and intensity that fans are sure to respond to.”

Music Times goes on to note that if this is One Direction without Malik, it’s not so bad after all. Fans on Twitter agree.

One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” instantly flew to No. 1 on iTunes and is currently selling five times as much as the other singles. The song is guaranteed to debut in the top ten on Billboard‘s Hot 100 next week. If it keeps selling at its current rate, the song could debut at No. 1. According to Idolator, the band performed the song for the first time in Indianapolis Friday evening.

“One Direction performed for the first time in Indianapolis last night (July 31). To celebrate, new single ‘Drag Me Down’ made its live debut. Fans inside the 67,000-capacity Lucas Oil Stadium cheered, especially when Harry Styles — who now bears a striking resemblance to Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, with his longer hair — let loose with his impassioned vocals at the bridge.”

It doesn’t seem like One Direction fans are missing Zayn Malik too much as their shows are receiving just as much (or even more) acclaim and ticket sales as they did before Malik left the band. According to MNR Daily, Zayn Malik’s real reason for leaving One Direction was to go solo and record “real music.” Zayn recently signed to RCA Records and will possibly drop a new single before the end of the year, with a full album release during the first quarter of 2016.

It will be interesting to see if “Drag Me Down” stays at the top long after the initial hype disappears. One Direction’s fifth album should see a release within the next couple of months.
