NBA Trade Rumors: Golden State Warriors Complete Deal With Philadelphia 76ers

NBA trade rumors have the Golden State Warriors sending Gerald Wallace to the Philadelphia 76ers. A report on the trade from CSN states that the 76ers will also receive cash and draft considerations in exchange for Jason Thompson. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Warriors acquired Wallace as part of the David Lee trade with the Boston Celtics. He won’t be taking the court for Golden State after all, but instead heads right back to the Atlantic division.

These NBA trade rumors seem to indicate that the Warriors would like to see numbers similar to what Lee used to put up. Jason Thompson had seven double-doubles in the 2014-15 NBA season, including one game where he had 23 points and 22 rebounds against the L.A. Clippers. He could be a valuable addition to the front court for the Warriors, and will likely see a lot of minutes off the bench. Warriors general manager Bob Myers already commented on the acquisition.

“We’re very happy to add Jason to our roster. He has a proven track record in this league and adds considerably to our team’s depth, which was a big key to our success last season and will be moving forward.”

For Gerald Wallace, this is about to be the seventh team that he has been on in his 14-year NBA career. During the 2014-15 NBA season, though, he averaged only 8.9 minutes a game, far off from the nearly 30 minutes he has averaged for a career. He provides good defense for the Philadelphia 76ers, but will cost just over $10.1 million for the 2015-16 NBA season. The idea here, was that the team could get out of paying some of the money that Jason Thompson is owed over the next two years.

Thompson has a contract that will pay him $6.65 million in 2015-16 and then just over $7 million for the 2016-17 NBA season. The net savings and getting another player off the books for that season seems to be the intent behind this deal for the 76ers. These NBA trade rumors also make sense for the Golden State Warriors in the short-term, as the team gets closer to being under the salary cap by shedding nearly $3.6 million in salaries for the 2015-16 NBA season.

While this deal might not make the radar of fantasy basketball owners, from a financial standpoint, it works out well for both franchises. Golden State gets added depth immediately and Philadelphia finds another way to pay less for its team.
