Biggest Spider Web In The World? It Has Taken Over Park And You Can Climb In

Is this the biggest spider web in the world? Probably not, but it has taken over a park in Wales and it’s so huge that people can actually climb in it.

If you’re afraid of spiders, this may not be your idea of a good time, but if you love nature and all it’s insects, it can be a unique experience. After all, how many people do you know who have climbed inside a spider web?

The amazing spider web is suspended 10-feet from the ground and extends around some trees. Taking advantage of the unusual display, the folks at Bute Park in Cardiff are grabbing the opportunity and allowing residents to explore the site’s natural habitat.

Despite what you may think, the giant spider web was not the work of insects, but was created by volunteers. It took them about a week and a half of using tape to bring the incredible creation to life. Visitors will be allowed to crawl inside the spider web throughout the month of August, according to Wales Online.

The idea was born from the group Numen/For Use and came about thanks to a collaboration between Cardiff council and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the website reports. The giant spider web — called The Tape — looks like a cocoon and it is safe for up to five humans to crawl at the same time.

One of the artists who came up with the concept, Sven Jonke, said he was pleased with how the “organic” design turned out.

“There was no computer involved, and not even sketches. If I left the volunteers to complete it again it would probably be different, so it is a little bit self-generated.”

“It’s the same way animals make their homes – they just drag one line around something and the home appears on its own. They are not thinking about it, they are just doing it.”

“There has been a lot of interest in it from people as they walk past. We are really keen to have it because it is an unusual way to look at nature and get new people engaged,” Nicola Hutchinson, a conservation officer for the Cardiff council said.

Another cabinet member, Bob Derbyshire, says the hope is that people will get a different perspective from looking at the giant spider web, which is open to visit from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
