New York Jets Rumors: Sheldon Richardson May ‘Never Play A Down’ In NFL After Latest Arrest

The New York Jets are rumored to be losing a key piece of their defense after Sheldon Richardson was arrested for allegedly street racing less than two weeks after being suspended for a positive marijuana test.

The team’s defensive tackle faces charges of resisting arrest along with other traffic violations after Missouri state police reportedly noticed two vehicles in what appeared to be a race on Interstate 64 back on July 14. The vehicles were clocked at speeds of 122, 135, and 143 miles per hour, police said.

As Fox 2 Now is St. Louis reported, Sheldon Richardson refused to stop for police.

Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, at which time the driver of a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur increased continued speeding to avoid citation. The driver got off the interstate, sped through a red traffic signal, and turned off its vehicle lights.

The driver then turned into the driveway of a home in a nearby neighborhood to avoid detection, but police noticed the brake lights and pulled in behind the car.

The situation seems to have gotten worse once police pulled him over. They found two other men and a 12-year-old child in the car, which police said smelled strongly of marijuana. They also found a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat.

With Sheldon Richardson already suspended four games for testing positive for marijuana, there are rumors that the latest incident will have him off the New York Jets entirely, and possibly out of the league.

The latest arrest is likely a disappointment to the New York Jets, who had been trying to rein in Richardson. Even veteran Darrelle Revis reached out, saying he had a conversation with the 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year in an attempt to set him straight.

“It’s not [being] upset,” Revis told ESPN. “It’s more so me being older and just trying to share some wisdom on him and just seeing where his head is and have a simple conversation. I’m not trying to point the finger at somebody. We all make mistakes in life. This is something he has to go through in his career and you just try to help him and back him up.”

While it’s unclear what his future holds, there are rumors that the New York Jets are livid with Sheldon Richardson. News of his arrest hit just an hour after the team’s first practice ended, and after Richardson told reporters, “[The Jets] don’t have to worry about my name being in the news again.”
