Savanah Morgan: Pregnant Mom Arrested After Toddler Found Unresponsive In Filthy Trailer Home Filled With 90 Dead And Dying Animals

Savanah Victoria Morgan is behind bars after police found the pregnant woman’s 2-year-old boy unconscious and badly bruised in a filthy trailer home that had more than 90 dead and dying animals.

Police were called to the home in Laurens County on Tuesday with reports that the toddler was unresponsive, WFSB reported. When they arrived, police found the boy with bruises on his face, neck, and back, said Lt. Scott Franklin.

This led police to 25-year-old Savanah Morgan, the boy’s father who is also eight months pregnant. She initially told police that the boy choked while eating chips, but later said she dropped the boy. A medical examination determined that the boy may have been dropped, but his injuries were too extensive to be caused by a fall alone.

The boy was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care.

Franklin said the rural home was the worst condition he had ever seen. The roughly 90 animals found inside of the double-wide trailer included cats, dogs, rodents, and even tarantulas. A report from animal control authorities found numerous dead animals placed in containers, including 48 dead rats.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in my 20 years doing this,” Franklin said.

The house was also filled with soiled diapers, feces, broken glass, and garbage covering the floor. Other police noted that the home had an almost unbearable stench.

“Most of our officers probably were faced with something last night that they probably have not seen in their careers. It was a very sad situation to see something like this,” added Laurens Sheriff Ricky Chastain.

Even the surviving animals were in terrible shape, officers told WFSB. Two dogs were chained up behind the home with no food or water, with bones protruding from their skin.

A judge said the toddler will have a “major road to recovery,” but was already improving after being taken from the home.

“He has bleeding of the brain,” said Joel Turner, a Law Enforcement Officer with Victim Advocate, in an interview with WYFF.

Charges are also pending against the child’s father, who reportedly lived in the filthy home and led police to the unresponsive boy. Police said there were also two other children in the home — aged one and two — who were taken out and are now in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

Franklin said Savanah Morgan is now in jail on numerous charges, including child abuse to inflict great bodily harm, neglect, and animal cruelty. Her bond is set at a total of $85,000.
