Sam Smith fans will be disappointed to learn that shortly after recovering from vocal cord surgery, the singer is taking even more time off from music. But according to Press Party, Smith has another good excuse for the hiatus.
Sam Smith claims that all the fame and success have taken a big chunk away from his time with family, whom he misses dearly. He especially misses the time spent away from his parents, an experience he described as “really tough.”
In fact, it was the time spent away from music due to his vocal cord recovery that made Sam Smith realize he needed to devote more of his life to the ones he loves. He claims the time out of the spotlight turned out to be a happy accident, because it gave him a glimpse into a life of relaxation — away from the constant touring and singing since his global fame.
“It’s been the best thing that’s happened to me ever. I feel like I’ve been gifted with time. I got to stop for a month and rest, and become normal again and to realise how insanely my life has changed. And in some areas it’s changed for the worse. Some things are taken away from you, so it was beautiful for me to be able to kind of regain my normality a little bit. Just be with my mum and my dad and my sisters, and remember how to laugh and chat about them and not have to talk about me all the time.”
So, according to Contact Music, Sam Smith is going to be pausing his professional career for a while, starting later this year. Fans may be saddened by the news, but after topping the charts with 2014’s In The Lonely Hour and earning four Grammy awards, Sam Smith probably deserves a break.
The parents of Sam Smith have probably suffered the most from his massive success. It’s been so difficult for them to see their son that they’ve had to take special measures just to talk with him after tour events.
“It got to the point where my mum and dad were being put on guest-lists to see me after shows; they didn’t get to spend any time with their son, and that’s not normal,” said Sam Smith. “It’s been really tough if I’m honest. There’s things that are taken away from you.”
Despite the upcoming break from music, Sam Smith claims he’s already hard at work on his follow-up album.
“‘I’m already writing,” said Sam. “I feel like I’ve already got the title to the album; I’ve got the concept to the album.”
