‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Season 2 Extended To 15 Episodes, Director Hints At More Zombie Shows

While Season 1 of AMC’s new zombie series Fear the Walking Dead hasn’t even aired yet, the network is so confident in their product that Season 2 has already been commissioned. This should come as no surprise considering the show it is based on, The Walking Dead, is such a phenomenal success.

Season 1 of Fear the Walking Dead will run for six episodes, as did its companion program, The Walking Dead, in its first season. However, director Greg Nicotero has confirmed to Daily Dead that Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead will run for 15 episodes. He also announced filming would begin for Season 2 later in the year.

“We’ll start shooting the first of fifteen episodes for season two sometime in November or December, so I think the plan is to have a zombie TV show on 52 weeks a year. In The Walking Dead we had six episodes for our first season and I think we did twelve or thirteen in our second season.”

While an extended Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead is exciting, Nicotero also implies there could be more to come. Considering The Walking Dead usually has 16 episodes per season, and Fear the Walking Dead will follow with at least 15 episodes per season, that still leaves approximately 21 weeks of the year to fill with zombie content. However, if they were to put breaks between each series, and assuming both series will be broken up into two parts per season, the breaks would be roughly four weeks. So, if each season runs for eight weeks, that would be, once again, roughly two months per mini season with a month break in between. If this were the case, it would certainly seem like AMC were running zombie programs all year round. So maybe that is what Nicotero was referring to rather than the implication there were more zombie content planned for AMC.

Another consideration is the fact AMC and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman anticipate The Walking Dead could run for a minimum of 10 seasons, possibly even up to 12 seasons. With the show currently entering its sixth season, that allows for at least four years with around the clock zombie programming. Now that’s something fans could really sink their teeth into!

Fear the Walking Dead will premiere on AMC on Sunday August 23, 2015. You can check out all the new stills for Episode 1 and 2 of Fear the Walking Dead here.
